La cemetière Père Lachaise

“This is the end”

I wonder if Jim Morrisson already knew where he would end up after his dead when he sang this famous line of his. After an overdose of drugs which he took when he was in Paris he was burried at the beautiful graveyard “cimetière du Père-Lachaise”.
It is awkward to combine the word beautiful with graveyard but only words like these can describe what it is like.

I went to Père-Lachaise the first time that I was in Paris. I had heard many people talking about how I had to go there and how special it was but still not imagined it to be so incredible as it was, it was definitely my highlight that trip.

Père-Lachaise is mainly famous for the people who are burried there. Next to Jim Morrison you can find the graves of people like the componist Chopin, writers Balzac and Oscar Wilde and singer Édith Piaf. Nowadays people like Cher are on the waitinglist for a spot at this cemetery.

The cemetery is 47 hectare big and it is a the ideal place to go to if you want to clear your head for a bit. The graves at the side are very impressive. From obelisks that go tens of meters up into the sky, to the human-size sculptures, from very old mausoleums to the modern simple black stones, every next grave is even more impressive then the other.

In between the graves are wide roads on which cars might drive by, but also small paths that lead you downhill passing the older parts of the graveyard. There are trees and plants everywhere and on many of the graves of famous people you will still see an enormous amount of flowers and candles brought there by admirerers, on Jim Morrison´s spot people even left beer and drugs at the time I was there.

Be sure to visit this place when you have booked apartments in paris, you can find it in the 11th arrondissement. From you apartments paris take metroline 2 or 3 and get off at metrostop Père-Lachaise (how convenient).
