When A Death Or Other Catastrophe Happens, An Emergency Passport Application May Be Needed April 26, 2010

Unfortunately, tragic events often unfold when people are least prepared for them, and this is especially true when it comes to a life threatening accident, illness or even death of a family member. When this takes place abroad, an already difficult situation may seem almost insurmountable as the family struggles to rushed travel arrangements. In today’s world, a valid passport is a travel necessity and not everyone has one. The comforting news is that it is possible to get an emergency US passport in a couple of different ways.

If there is an emergency, the first thing that needs to be done is contact the Department of State’s Passport Information Center. The people there are prepared for this type of situation and will be able to guide the family through the process of getting a passport as quickly as possible. The situation will have to fall into their guidelines, but if it does, a passport may be in hand in as little as 24 hours.

There is a National Passport Information Center that has an automatic phone appointment system that can be accessed 24/7. If it is impossible to get an appointment time that meets the family’s needs, a live person can be reached at a call center from 6AM to 12 midnight, ET, on weekdays. A customer service representative can supply direction on what to do in this case.

Because the government options do not always fit into our plan, there are also plenty of private passport expediting companies that offer services to issue emergency passports. These agencies are approved by the State Department to help cut some of the hassle out of getting a passport. They will of course charge a fee for their services, but when people are dealing with an emergency the fee is nothing compared to the aggravation that it saves.

When 24 hour turnaround is the only option, these firms can do this for you. In the case of a family already struggling with the illness of a member abroad, even the expedited government process can seem onerous. It is a simple fact that when one is stressed and consumed with other necessities, it becomes far easier to make mistakes in the application, which could cause it to be delayed even more. A private agency takes this burden away and allows the family to concentrate on other needed activities such as arranging transportation.

Most of the private passport agencies perform transactions online, especially when it comes to renewing an existing passport. It is a great relief to be able to leave passport problems to someone else and to only need to fill out some simple online forms rather than deal with an in-person visit to the post office. These firms specialize in knowing exactly what to do and can conduct most communications with the family via email, leaving phone lines free for more pressing matters.

Naturally, the cost of using a private agency is going to be more than simply going the government route alone, but it is true that time is money. The comfort of leaving the details to someone else can be worth its weight in gold. A two to three day turn around will cost the applicant about $200. Bear in mind that the government fees will also be assessed on top of the agency’s fees, so figure that everything will cost about $300 or more.

While it would be great to think that we would never get caught in a position of needing an emergency USA passport in a situation like this. Life happens and there is nothing that we can do about it. It is recommended that everyone have a passport, even if they never plan on traveling abroad because you just never know what life is going to throw at you. However, in those cases where it is necessary to get one on short notice, it is nice to know that there are US passport expediting services available to handle these details and get us on our journey that much quicker.
