Poitiers,
France
Travel about 330km south west
of Paris and you'll reach Poitiers, an historic town of 120,000 inhabitants
(including peripheral suburbs) which has much to offer to those vacationing in
France.
Poitiers is a town of
contrasts. It boasts many historic buildings including several Romanesque
churches and a 12-13C Cathedral. And yet, travel a little to the outskirts of
town, and you'll discover that Poitiers is also host to one of Europe's most
advanced technological theme parks known as the Futuroscope.
Within the town itself, a
number of museums are worth a visit. These include the Musée Sainte Croix, at 3
bis rue Jean Jaurès. This museum includes archaeological material from the
region, as well as decorative arts, and 'beaux arts'. There's the Musée Rupert
de Chièvres, at 9 rue Victor-Hugo. This museum's focus is on contemporary art,
'beaux arts' and also includes some archaeological material. The Espace Pierre
Mendès France is also worth travelling to see as it is the regional centre for
scientific culture. It includes technical and industrial exhibitions as well as
a planetarium.
Poitiers has been inhabited for
over 2000 years, and history has left it's mark at each turn. Notre Dame La
Grande is the centrepiece of the town, a Romanesque church dating to the 11-12C
and located in the town's central square. All within walking distance, and not
far from Notre Dame lies the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, a 12-13C gothique
monument. Then there's the Baptistère Saint Jean, a rare witness to early
Christianity in Europe with sections dating between 4C and 9C. Travel a few
hundred metres down a side street from the Baptistère, and two more churches
are within a stone's throw of each other. These are the 11C-15C église
Sainte-Radegonde, and the église Saint-Hilaire, an 11C building.
Other buildings worth
travelling to within the town centre include the Palais de Justice - Palais des
Comtes de Poitou, 12C and 14C, with its large 'salle des Pas Perdus' (room of
the lost steps), and the Hôtel de Ville, or town hall, dating from the 19th
century.
Should you tire from visiting
all of these historic buildings, take a stroll to one of the magnificent parks
within walking distance of the town centre. Le Jardin des Plantes is a stone's
throw from the Notre Dame La Grande. Le Jardin des Plantes lies in a quiet,
botanical setting and boasts a glass-house. Travel by foot to the other side of
the town centre, and you'll come to the much larger Parc de Blossac with it's
high walls affording a wonderful view of the surrounding area. The Parc de
Blossac also has several animal enclosures. La Roseraie is another garden
dedicated to 461 varieties of rose beds, as well as a diverse variety of trees.
If you have a taste for the
technological on your vacation, travel about 10km out of town to the Futuroscope
Theme Park which is host to over 20 cutting edge technology attractions from
a 3D cinema, to simulators, surround and water screens.
Climb 'Le Gyrotour' - the
Futuroscope Observatory. From this 45m high tower, you can savour a panoramic
overview of the daring and original architecture of the Futuroscope buildings.
Or join the Race for
Atlantis, as the Gods square off in a terrifying no-holds-barred chariot race.
Catapulted at dizzying speed, you will plunge into the middle of this
legendary race through the narrow streets of the mythical sunken city.
Or take an ultra fast-paced
trip through the heart of the Vienne departement! Whether it is from the
controls of your delta-plane or at the wheel of a racing car, you will
discover Vienne as you have never seen it before!
Alternatively, take off for
Brazil and discover its many facets in 360°. From the Amazon River to the
Carnaval in Rio, along the beaches of Copacabana and into the gigantic
Maracana stadium - you'll think you've travelled to the centre of Brazil
itself, surrounded by its colours and music. This is a lively and joyful tour,
exotic in fragrance, high in colour and rich in rhythm.
