The
Loire Valley, France
Extending east from the city of
Nantes, the Loire Valley is often referred to as 'The Garden of France'. Dotted
with a multitude of Châteaux (castles) built during the Renaissance period
(16C), and later the Classical period (17 and 18C), the Loire Valley was where
the Kings of France used to reside, from Charles VII to Henri III.
The Loire Valley is also a wine
making region, allowing you to drop into many of the boutique wineries strewn
across the country-side during your vacation for a little wine tasting, or maybe
to stock up the cellar back home? Many quaint towns and abbeys also exist. Some
of the major towns which are a must to travel to include Gien, Orléans,
Beaugency, Blois, Saumur and Angers.
If you vacation there in the
summer months, then during the evenings many of the Châteaux also play host to
'son et lumière' (sound and light) shows, where historical events are depicted
and played out by locals dressed in period costumes. Some are most elaborate,
involving casts of several hundred people as well as 'chevaliers' on horse back.
A few of the many 'must travel
to see' Châteaux (and son et lumière shows) during your vacation include:
Azay-Le-Rideau - Built
between 1518 and 1529, this Château was the creation of a leading financier
of the time, Gilles Berthalot. His wife, Philippe Lesbahy, directed the work.
The state has owned it since 1905, and it is presently decorated with fine
furniture and Renaissance and 17C tapestries. This Château is a true work of
elegance and is situated in a tree clad setting on the banks of the Indre
river.
Château de Blois -
This is an impressive building and the show-piece of the town of Blois, which,
amongst other things, is also home to the 'Poulain' chocolate factory (if
traveling there by train, one can smell the cocoa upon arrival at the train
station!). The Château de Blois has a rich history of intrigue, and different
wings of the building were built over several centuries ranging from the
Feudal period (13 C), to the Gothic-Renaissance transitional period (late 15,
early 16 C), to the famous 'François I' wing built in the Renaissance period
between 1515-1524, to the Gaston d'Orléans Wing constructed in the Classical
period 1635-1638.
Le Lude - The best
'son et lumière' show this writer has had the pleasure of attending was at
the Château du Lude, situated in the small town of Le Lude on the south bank
of the Loir river, not far from the town of La Flèche. The son et lumière
show, entitled 'Sumptuous Nights on the Banks of the Loir' (les glorieuses et
fastueuses soirées au bord du Loir), is an unforgettable experience.
Spectators sit on the opposite bank of the Loir after dark and watch five
centuries of history unfold. This is played out by a cast of 350 in period
costumes and includes horsemen, royal chariots, and period vessels traveling
up the Loir, accompanied by admirable illuminations, sound and fountains.
Spend your vacation there during June to September to catch the performances.
Château de Chenonceau
- No vacation to the Loire Valley is complete without a visit to Chenonceau.
This majestic château spans the Cher river, and was built by Thomas Bohier, a
wealthy tax collector under Charles VIII, Louis XII, and François I.
Chenonceau is commonly referred to as 'The Château of Six Women', owing to
the leading part its hostesses played there for 400 years. These hostesses
started with Bohier's wife, Katherine Briçonnet, who passed away in 1526. The
château was later acquired by King Henri II, who gave it to his mistress
Diane de Poitiers in 1547. The later hostess included Catherine de Medici,
Louise of Lorraine, Madame Dupin, and finally Madame Pelouze who purchased the
château in 1864.
