The History of The Amsterdam Theatre October 31, 2009
Posted by janey in : western europe , comments closedOne of the first shows to be performed at the New Amsterdam Theatre was ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by Shakespeare. After this, the theater hosted the Ziegfeld Follies, which showcased talents like Fanny Brice, the Eaton siblings, and Olive Thomas. Then, the Midnight Frolics, which was a racier version of the follies, started to show on the rooftop of the theater for audiences that wanted a show later at night.
After the Great Depression, the theater went through some hard times financially, and the theater closed in 1936. The following year, it was converted into a movie theater. Decades later, arts enthusiasts wanted to restore the theater so that it could serve its original purpose. The New Amsterdam Theatre officially reopened in 1997, and since then, great shows like Disney’s stage version of ‘The Lion King’ have been performed there, as well as the stag version of ‘Mary Poppins’.
Oh yes, in case you had planned to attend a show and staying overnight in the city, then it is a good idea to book an Amsterdam apartment before.
