Posted by janey in : backpacking , comments closedTake a drive through the hills of southeastern Iowa on your Iowa vacation to the Bentonsport Village for a true step back into the history of the area. This community was a thriving, critical part of the development and settlement of the state of Iowa. The river brought the businessmen, families and farmers to the area in the 1800’s, now the Bentonsport National Historic District located along the shore of the river.
There are a number of the buildings still standing that were constructed during this time. The Mormons were helpful in the construction of many of the buildings. They came on their way to the West and used their skill at building to develop this region of the state.
Bentonsport was also an important stop of the Underground Railroad. This village and many others up and down the line were the life-saving stops for the slaves escaping the horrors of slavery and the fear of being recaptured.
Today the area is a home to some artists that are creating handmade works of art and useful items that will be treasured by everyone that buys them. You can also watch the craftsman at work in their shops and ask questions about their art.
